The Art of Orbling

Orbling originated with Michael Moschen in the 1980s and indeed it was Moschen’s hands weaving the magic in the infamous “Labyrinth” movie, where David Bowie posed as the Magician.

Orbling is sometimes called “dynamic manipulation” or “contact juggling”. Contact juggling has been described by Wikipedia as:

“A form of object manipulation that focuses on the movement of objects such as balls in permanent contact with the body.

Having little in common with "toss" juggling, it most typically involves the rolling of one or more completely transparent balls on the hands and arms to create visual illusions, such as that of a ball fixed in space."

Exercise & Fitness

As exercise, juggling is a highly aerobic activity, increasing the heart rate and respiration. Attend an Orbling Workshop. Orbling has incredible health benefits:

  • general fitness levels improve through increased aerobic activity
  • the mind develops an elevated focus of intent
  • hand-eye coordination moves into the “higher-order reflexes”, reflexes not typically associated with normal human activity
Meditation

Orbling is a meditative art form. It necessitates moving or dancing using rhythmic patterns with the orb or orbs. Once the mind and body tune into each-other, the syncopated movement allows the mind to fall away so that the juggler feels at one with the ball.

The juggler becomes the ball. Contact jugglers have described this phenomenon as “tranquil space” which overcomes them whilst deep in their practice.

Joy

An immense level of joy is experienced when a juggler witnesses their hands learning what their mind is willing them to do. This feeling of accomplishment and skillfulness will be for the artist to keep!
